Last February, a motorcyclist named Lu was driving on a road in downtown Hsinchu when he hit a woman named Huang who was crossing the road. He was charged with manslaughter for failing to give way to pedestrians, but the judge considered that the pedestrian ran a red light and although the motorcyclist had five seconds to react, the intersection was poorly lit and it was questionable whether he could notice the pedestrian.
