Common types of online fraud and how to prevent them

Common types of online fraud

1. Using stolen accounts and online game transactions to commit fraud
(1) Borrow money by pretending to be a friend on messaging software
The fraud syndicate uses a hacking program to crack the user's password, then impersonates the user and borrows money from the person's chat friends.
(2) Online game equipment and game currency transaction fraud
The first is to sell game equipment at low prices and allow players to remit money through offline banks; the second is to post power leveling information on game forums, and the entire account will be stolen after a day or two of power leveling; the third is to provide the information when trading accounts. According to more detailed information, a few days after the player's transaction was completed and the game was played, the account was stolen, causing financial losses.
(3) Dating fraud
The fraud group uses the website to establish an initial relationship with the client in the name of making friends, and then asks the client to remit money in the name of lack of money, etc., and then disappears after the remittance.

2. Online shopping fraud
(1) Multiple remittances
The fraud syndicate uses various reasons such as "not receiving payment" or "proposing to remit a certain amount before the previous payment can be refunded" to force the parties to remit money multiple times.
(2) Fake links and fake web pages
Fraudulent groups provide fake links or web pages, and transactions often show unsuccessful transactions, allowing the parties to remit money multiple times.
(3) Refusal to the Safe Payment Act
The fraud group refuses to use the safe payment tools of the website's partner vendors for various reasons.
(4) Method of defrauding money by collecting deposits
The fraud group requires the victim to pay a certain amount of deposit or deposit before shipping the goods. Taking advantage of the parties' eagerness to get the goods and various seemingly reasonable reasons to induce the parties to make additional deposits.
(5) Appointment and remittance
A common method used to commit fraud when buying second-hand cars and train tickets online is that the fraud group will make an appointment with the client to meet at a certain place to inspect the car or give him a ticket, and then ask the client's friends to transfer money as soon as they receive the client's phone call. The fraud group then used the "caller ID arbitrary software" to impersonate the client and call his friend to ask him to remit money.
(6) Shoddy goods as good ones
Counterfeit, low-quality, and low-quality knock-off products are used to pass off as brand-name goods. After receiving the goods, the parties complain that they have been deceived.

3. Online lottery winning fraud
Fraudulent groups use email, online games, messaging software and other users to publish winning reminder information. When the parties concerned conducted consultation and verification according to the designated "telephone number" or "webpage", the fraud group asked the parties to remit money again and again for various reasons such as winning prizes and paying taxes. It was not until the parties lost contact that they realized they had been deceived.

4. Phishing Scam
There are two modus operandi:
(1) Fraudulent groups send a large number of fraudulent emails, which often use content such as winning prizes, consulting, and reconciliation to lure users into filling in their financial account numbers and passwords.
(2) The fraud group sets up a fake bank website. When users enter the wrong URL, they will be directed to this fake website. Steal users' bank account numbers and passwords.

How to prevent online fraud

1. Install anti-virus software on your computer and mobile phone and develop the habit of regular scanning.
2. Don’t be greedy for petty gains. Although things on the Internet are often cheaper than those on the market, you should be careful if the prices are significantly lower. Such products are often either scams or shoddy goods. You must be vigilant to avoid being deceived.
3. Use safer payment tools. When shopping online, check carefully and don’t be too troublesome. First, observe the seller's credit worthiness, the quality of the goods, and compare products. Be sure to use a safer payment method rather than going through the trouble of transferring money directly from the bank.
4. Screen carefully and take strict precautions. Pay attention to the website name. No matter how realistic the fake webpage is, there is still a difference between the website name and the official website. Once you find that the website name has an extra "suffix" or tampered with "letters", you must be vigilant. Especially for websites that specifically require bank card numbers and passwords, don't be careless.
5. Never buy illegal products online. Such as mobile phone monitors, graduation certificates, answers to test questions, etc. Almost 100% of the sales of these so-called "commodities" online are scams. Do not participate in illegal transactions.
6. When shopping online, choose formal and large-scale e-commerce. Set a complex payment password and change it regularly. It is best to choose "password + verification code" double verification.
7. Don’t believe anyone who asks you to pay first in various names. Don't lend your bank card to others easily. Your belongings must be under your control and should not be handed over to others, especially strangers. When something happens, always ask why!
8. Improve self-protection awareness, pay attention to properly keeping your private information, such as personal ID number, account number, password, etc., do not disclose it to others, and try to avoid using online e-commerce services in Internet cafes and other public places.
9. When registering an account on the website, only fill in the required fields marked * and try to provide the minimum information.
10. Do not open unfamiliar emails at will, especially emails with attachments or emails claiming to have won a prize.
11. Try not to "use the Internet" and do not connect to unknown WiFi in public places.
12. Nowadays, there are a lot of links to test personality, fortune, etc. on the Internet. These links often ask for basic information such as name and age. The website background may also directly obtain your mobile phone number and other information.
13. Do not upload sensitive personal photos and information to the cloud.
14. Try not to disclose your name, phone number, address and other information in clear text on the website. For example, you can write about Mr. Pei, but try not to write about Pei Zhiyong. Next, many rental websites now hide several yuan of user contact information. This method is relatively safer, at least it won't be found by people searching casually.
15. If users discover that personal information has been leaked and wish to delete the relevant information, in addition to requesting deletion on the original website, they can also use search engines to check where their information still exists and then request deletion.

What to do if you encounter online fraud

1. Do not take the initiative to contact the other party and make so-called consultation phone calls. This will only make you fall for the bait step by step.
2. Don’t rely too much on the Internet. When you encounter someone borrowing money, remember the motto “Don’t decide to pay money late, get some sleep and talk to your relatives again.” Leave more time for yourself to think and confirm the relevant situation.
3. Once you discover that the other party may be a scammer, stop the remittance immediately to prevent further losses.
4. Report immediately. You can call the customer service number on the official website, the local police station or 110 to seek verification or report to the relevant departments.
