The rider killed a pedestrian and was acquitted in a rare case! Last February, a motorcyclist named Lu was driving on a road in downtown Hsinchu when he hit a woman named Huang who was crossing the road. He was charged with manslaughter for failing to give way to pedestrians, but the judge considered that the pedestrian ran a red light and although the motorcyclist had five seconds to react, the intersection was poorly lit and it was questionable whether he could notice the pedestrian. It was difficult to determine whether there was a causal relationship between the accident and the motorcyclist, so the judge ruled the motorcyclist not guilty.

Li Xin, an attorney at Fidelity Law Offices, said that in similar car accident incidents, even if the pedestrian is considered to be at fault, it is usually considered that the rider also had some fault for not noticing the situation in front of the car. Therefore, the judge's determination that the pedestrian was grossly negligent for running a red light and the rider not guilty requires a certain amount of moral courage and emphasizes the importance of abiding by traffic rules.
