In October 2024, a man surnamed Zeng, feeling upset, set fire to the curtains in his rented apartment in Xinzhuang District, New Taipei City, with a lighter, causing a fire that resulted in the death of one neighboring couple and serious injury to another. Afterwards, he dressed in women's clothing and turned himself in to the police station. He was sentenced to eight years in prison in the first instance. Both the prosecution and the defense appealed. Zeng denied committing murder and argued that the first-instance sentence was too harsh; the prosecution argued that he was also involved in attempted murder and that the first-instance sentence was too lenient.
Attorney Li Yusheng of Fidelity Law Firm stated that the defendant in this case is guilty of arson, murder, and attempted murder under the Criminal Code, which are serious offenses. The first instance court considered his surrender to the police, granting him a reduced sentence, and determined that he lacked the subjective intent to kill a specific person. Considering his family background, the court imposed a moderate sentence of eight years imprisonment, which is considered appropriate. Although he is seeking a change in the murder charge in the second instance, the possibility of overturning the murder charge is extremely low, as arson in a densely populated residential area clearly indicates a foreseeable outcome that could lead to the death of others.
