The Executive Yuan announced yesterday (27th) the personnel of the newly established Sports Minister. The first Sports Minister in Taiwan's history will be Li Yang, a two-time Olympic badminton gold medalist. The news has attracted considerable attention from all walks of life. Li Yang has a good image and has many endorsements in the past. Now, in order to avoid commercial disputes, he has to give up commercial cooperation. According to estimates, the loss may be at least 30 million yuan! In response to this, Li Yang issued a statement, saying that he appreciates the concern of the outside world and has completed all compliance procedures.

Li Yusheng, an attorney at Fidelity Law Firm, stated that according to the Civil Service Act, civil servants are prohibited from engaging in commercial activities. If civil servants engage in endorsement or other commercial promotional activities, this could violate relevant provisions of the Act. Upon assuming the position of minister, Li Yang may need to cease endorsements and commercial promotions he has previously undertaken. However, whether this constitutes a breach of contract and whether he would be liable for compensation depends on the terms of the contract he signed with the manufacturer.
