A fire broke out in a parking lot in Tucheng District, New Taipei City, in the early hours of the morning, destroying six cars and a warehouse, including two high-priced Mercedes-Benz vehicles. The total damage is estimated to be in the millions of dollars. However, an investigation by the parking management department revealed that the parking lot was not registered and will be fined NT$3,000. The question remains: who should the car owners seek compensation from? A lawyer pointed out that although the parking lot is not responsible for safekeeping, it must provide a safe place. To seek compensation, they must first wait for an assessment report.

Lawyer Li Yusheng from Fidelity Law Firm stated that in this case, since a fire occurred in the parking lot, it is still necessary to determine whether the parking lot operator fulfilled its obligation to provide a suitable and safe parking environment for vehicles. If it is ultimately determined that the operator was negligent in its management regarding the fire, then it will be liable for compensation for the damage to the vehicles. The car owners can present the vehicle damage or repair invoices to claim damages from the parking lot operator.
