According to a report by FTV News, the New Taipei District Court issued its first-instance verdict on October 20, 2026, in a case involving celebrities evading military service. All nine celebrities who voluntarily surrendered received suspended sentences of three to four years, with conditions including paying a certain amount to the public treasury and providing community service. The individuals involved were accused of using a group to provide false medical information to evade military service. This verdict represents the first-instance result for specific defendants and does not imply that other cases still under trial will receive the same treatment.
In an interview, Attorney Li Yusheng of Fidelity Law Firm analyzed that the court considered that these defendants voluntarily surrendered, confessed to their crimes, and expressed remorse. Based on the specific circumstances of each individual, the court deemed them worthy of a chance to reform and thus granted them probation. Whether or not probation is granted is still a case-by-case judgment; it is not that simply pleading guilty or being willing to pay money guarantees exemption from imprisonment.
Surrender and confession should not be confused: under criminal law, surrender must meet conditions such as the crime not yet being discovered in order to have a corresponding reduction in sentence. As for...probationThis is a system where the execution of a sentence is temporarily suspended upon a guilty verdict, not a acquittal. Payments to the public treasury and obligatory labor are obligations attached to the judgment and cannot be directly referred to as commutation fines. Those granted probation must strictly abide by the conditions of the judgment; whether they are still required to serve in the military depends on their age, physical condition, and military service regulations.
