Former People's Party Chairman Ko Wen-je has been detained and denied access to visitors because of his involvement in a corruption case. The funeral for his deceased father, Ko Cheng-fa, will be held on the 10th of next month (3/10). Therefore, Ko Wen-je, through his lawyer, requested yesterday (2/26) to lift the ban on visitors, hoping to discuss funeral arrangements with his family. The Taipei District Court will open a trial today (2/27) at 2:30 p.m. and will notify family members to appear in court to make statements.

Liu Yiling, an attorney at Fidelity Law Offices, said that according to the Criminal Procedure Law, the main basis for determining whether to detain and deny access to visitors is whether the defendant has the possibility of colluding with others or fleeing. When the case was prosecuted, it was ruled that Ko Wen-je was detained and not allowed to see anyone. So far, Ko Wen-je has not pleaded guilty, and the court has not formally summoned Ko Wen-je for trial. In addition, the important fugitive defendant Xu Zhiyu is still at large and has not yet appeared in court. There is still a high possibility that the defendants and witnesses related to this case have colluded in their testimony. Therefore, from a legal perspective, the possibility that the court will maintain the detention and not allow visitors is very high. But the judge in this case may have made some concessions based on humanitarian considerations.
