Family members of the third generation of "Jincheng Fish Balls", a century-old fish ball shop on Dihua Street in Taipei City, accused their mother of being defrauded out of nearly NT$300 million! The family said that before her death, her mother practiced at the "Donglin Temple" in Yilan. Unexpectedly, she donated nearly "300 million" in just 4 years. The family didn’t know about it until last year. They also discovered that while her mother was in the intensive care unit, the temple authorities took her to the hospital to remit money. In the end, my mother donated so much that she didn't even have any money left for the surgery, and she was so angry that she sued Donglin Temple for fraud.
Lawyer Liu Yiling from Fidelity Law Firm said that the issue in this case is whether the woman donated voluntarily or was defrauded. If the temple authorities, with the intention of coveting other people's property, use unfair methods or words to make the lady fall into a mistake and agree to donate large sums of money one after another, it may still constitute the crime of criminal fraud and be punished with a five-year fine. A person may be sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment of not more than 10 years, short-term detention, or may in addition be fined not more than 500,000 yuan.
