According to Mirror News, seven volunteer soldiers in the military police company guarding the Wenyuan vault of the Central Bank were found to have gambled online within the camp, using messaging apps to settle accounts and paying in cash. Some soldiers have accumulated gambling debts as a result. The military police command confirmed that the individuals involved have been transferred from their current positions and are under investigation. The Central Bank stated that the gold in the vault is safe.
Attorney Hsu Wan-wei stated that gambling within military camps involves more than just whether individual individuals placed bets; it also requires clarifying whether anyone solicited, collected payments, kept accounts, or provided gambling venues and equipment. Different levels of participation may correspond to different legal assessments, and each case must be judged individually based on the betting methods, cash flow, division of labor, and subjective perception.
For military personnel, even if criminal liability is still pending investigation or court determination, acts such as gambling using mobile phones within the barracks or accumulating gambling debts may simultaneously trigger disciplinary action, duty adjustments, and personnel penalties. If a case involves multiple individuals, the investigation will typically focus on the actual actions and evidence of each individual, and it is inappropriate to infer the guilt of everyone simply from the description of "collective."criminal responsibility.
