According to a report by FTV News, seven volunteer soldiers from the military police unit responsible for guarding the Central Bank's Wenyuan vault were found to have been using their mobile phones to participate in online gambling within the camp. They settled their bets through messaging apps and paid in cash, with some even accumulating gambling debts as a result. The military police command stated that the individuals involved have been transferred from their current positions and handed over to the New Taipei District Prosecutors Office for investigation. The Central Bank stated that the gold in the vault is safe.
Attorney Li Yusheng stated that whether betting on online gambling platforms constitutes criminal gambling liability depends on the specific game content, the methods of betting and winning/losing, whether it involves chance, and whether the perpetrator profited or participated repeatedly. If it occurs within a military camp, in addition to criminal liability, it may also involve different levels of legal consequences such as military discipline, duty management, and personnel punishment.
If those involved in the case used messaging apps to solicit, collect payments, or keep accounts for others, their liability may not be limited to the individuals themselves; prosecutors and police still need to clarify each person's actual role, the flow of funds, and their subjective understanding. The content of news reports should be based on the investigation results and the final determination of the court.
